A personal note on MarriagePosted Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at 12:52 PM
Twelve years ago today I received the most important gift I've ever been given. My best friend said "I do" when Father Ernie asked her if she would take me as her husband. Our first year was a VERY stressful time, and they've gotten MUCH easier since then. We're now about to start our 13th year together and couldn't be happier about our prospects for the coming year. We are living in an area that offers so much to do for recreation…year 'round, I might add. Our pets are doing well. We are both in good health overall. Bonnie and I have no problems, even after 12 years, walking along holding hands, or with our arms around each other (unless it's really hot outside). I have friends that I've seen get married and have kids and get divorced. I've got one friend that's been married four times just in the short time I've known him. When people ask me what to expect out of marriage, I tell them two things. 1) Expect to compromise. If you are going into a marriage expecting that everything will be perfect all the time, you're going to be sorely disappointed. If you know from the start that things will come up that will require a bit of sacrifice on your part, it's not such a big deal. 2) If you're not marrying your best friend, then you're marrying the wrong person. By this I mean, if you have other friends that you would rather spend time with, than the person you're thinking of marrying. Then maybe you should be re-considering that proposal. Don't get me wrong, everyone needs their time apart, but at the end of the day, the person that should mean the most to you in the world is the person that you're agreeing to be with for the rest of your life. Finally, I would just like to take a moment to say that my beautiful bride, Bonnie, does mean the world to me and I can't possibly tell her how much I love her and appreciate her putting up with me (I know it's tough at times). I'd also like to wish her a Happy Anniversary, just in case she decides to read my blog.

Happy Anniversary to Mr. & Mrs. Williamson!
I personally don't attend weddings anymore. All 5 that I have attended have resulted in bitter divorces, The one I missed while I was living in TX. is still going strong after 25 years.

Happy Anniversary! I'm proud that you guys have made it this far! My mother recently got married for her first time back in 2003, and I really hope they can stay together for a really long time.
Way to go Thom and Bonnie! When I read your blog it reminded me that I haven't told my lovely wife Shawna how very much I love and appreciate her today. Got to go find a phone..........
Happy Anniversary! I'm sure your wife reads your blogs (especially if she reads the title to this one)!
Happy Anniversary
I wish you many many more wonderful years together

That was very sincere... And though I am not married, and probably won't ever be, I can agree 110%... So many people have this idea that marriage is supposed to be about living together for a few years and having kids... then staying together just for the kids.
Marriage is supposed to be a life long commitment, and again, so many people I think feel like 'it's the right thing to do' when they first marry. If it isn't really in their heart, and as you said feel like they'd rather spend time with others then they should reconsider. People just should not be getting married at 18, and divorcing by 21...
It is wonderful to see you and your wife set such an amazing example of what marriage is about. It's too bad not everybody can experience that.
Congratulations to you both! You are so correct in your advice on marriage. My husband and I will celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary in 2 weeks. Just to add a bit to your advice if I may...
Make time for one another daily! Whether it's a date night or even coffee on the porch you need to put aside time for each other. Most importantly, don't discuss kids or money!! Just hang out a minute with the person you fell in love with years ago. When life gets busy with jobs and kids its easy to get caught up and lose each other. Just a quick fifteen minutes of thoughtful time can go a long way. We made this rule long ago and our coffee time together is what we look forward to every day!
As you said, marriage will have its ups and downs but with a bit of work come the best of rewards! Congrats again!
you really nailed it,i've been married for 22 years and there have been many peaks and valleys but to this day i can say that she is still my best friend, have you ever thought about being a marriage counselor.
I love you too baby.
very true- marriage is something that you must work at or you will lose it in all the hussle-bussle(?) of the world today. I have been married for 10 years and have 5 children(ages 15, 9, 8, 6, and 3). The 15 year old is my step daughter who lives with us and have raised since she was 3!! We have had many ups and downs and I am sure still have more to go, but in the end we love each other and can't imagine our lives any different!!!
