How about 2007, were you successful with those resolutions?

I've seen the blogs and heard everyone talking about their resolutions for the coming year. Maybe we should take a step back and reflect upon the resolutions that we set for 2007 and whether or not were we successful in keeping those. If you were, how did you do it? This may actually help someone in planning for the coming year's resolution to lose weight, quit smoking, be a better spouse/parent/neighbor, get better organized, or be better at managing their finances. If you have advice on how you successfully accomplished your resolution for this year, please share this with us.

Personally, I take the easy way out. My resolution this year was the same as it usually is, to be a better person overall. I've gotten quite a bit better at looking for the good in people, and trying to keep an open mind when I'm dealing with others. Don't get me wrong, one of my goals is to be a better husband and part of that is to make sure that my family is taken care of and that we're better off than the year before, not just financially, but in overall satisfaction with our lives. I've tried to think more on a civic level than just what I can do to better my circumstances; this includes little things like letting people pull out in front of me in traffic, letting people with fewer grocery items cut in front of me at the checkout, and slowing down when I'm driving. I also joined the local volunteer fire department to help out if they need me since I've fought fires in the Navy and could possibly help. Now I need to see what I'm going to for this next year.

Were we supposed to keep track of our resolutions? Darn, I will have to do it next year.

Thom,

Very good question and alot of great ways to pick a resolution for 2008 and to keep it. My 2007 resolution was to reduce stress, and to achieve that I had to eliminate what was causing it. Problem was, I cannot get rid of my children and wife, so I bought a closet with a lock on the outside. Just kidding.

I found out that eating more fruit was better, not drinking caffiene helped alot, and taking some classes in my favorite hobbies improved at decreasing stress.

Things that can lead to stress was not dealing with problems immediately, because at night before bed you don't sleep well because it is nagging at you.

Caffiene seemed to be a huge culprit, so at 4pm, about 5-6 hours before bed, do not drink caffienated beverages. I read alcohol leads to stress too, but I don't drink it so I cannot affirm this is true or not. But if you "numb" yourself from problems or chores that need to be dealt with then the stress will affect you sooner than later. I think the best way, because it is fun, is to advance your skills in a particular hobby you are interested in. Mine is programming, so I took some classes in an area that I really wanted to learn.

These are a few ways to reduce stress by small changes in lifestyle and at very little cost. Actually it will probably improve your financial status, because you will eat less, and not consume high-taxed items like alcohol, cigarettes etc.
