Happy Solstice Everyone!Posted Monday, December 22, 2008, at 8:39 PM
Ok, it's actually a day late. The gist is that the shortest day (and longest night) of the year has passed and we are now on our way back to longer days. There are many cultures around the world (and throughout time) that do or have celebrated the winter solstice. This is one of the more depressing (psychologically) times of the years, presumably because of the holidays. The way I look at it, today is the day that allows you to look forward to the longer (hopefully more productive) days ahead. I'm not diggin' the short days and I can't wait for it to be daylight on my drive home from work.
Merry Christmas, everyone, and may you have a Happy (and safe) New Year's holiday. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Amen, Thom.
These short days really bug me and I can hardly wait for warmer, longer days. Heck, right now I would be happy with the 110 degree days we had in the summer of 2007.
gottago - I've got to disagree with you there. I would much prefer cold to hot. You can always put more clothes on, but there are only so many clothes you can take off....before they arrest you. I would like to have cooler weather and longer days, although I know those two don't go together until you get to where the days are weeks or months long. And I'm not really thrilled about that idea either.
I could use a few days right now that are a week long :>) There never seems to be enough hours in the day this time of year.
I never have understood why they do the time changes the way they do.
They either take away an hour of our sleep in the morning (grrrr) or they remove an hour of our time to relax and get things done after school or work are over.
If I had my druthers,I'd take the hour out of the middle and let people get credit for it anyway.
(Or,maybe, have a siesta/tea hour that isn't counted but is used for rest, reflection, recreation and generally recharging one's batteries by socializing and taking a few moments just to enjoy being alive.)
That might be the best solution.
We'd still have our snooze time and start our day when the sun is up,we'd still have some daylight after the evening news and we'd have sixty minutes in every day to set aside the drudgery and connect with one another, top off our blood sugar and get in a power nap.
Such downtime has been popular in other countries.
Maybe,we need to include an afternoon rest period for the age group that could really use it.
Happy Winter Solstice, have a good one..
