Bartering

I was wondering if there are any bartering groups in Bedford county. I have looked at Craigslist, but there are really not many people from Shelbyville on there. I don't really have anything specific in mind. I was just thinking that, with the way that some people view the economy, this might be a valid avenue to explore for applying one's skills to obtain a service from another.

I was reading one site that mentioned the "horse trader". A person that would organize these trades amongst more than just two parties. I thought about that and realized that (being the geek that I am) a database with a decent administrator could accomplish the same feat.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on bartering for some services or merchandise locally?

Actually I think that is a great idea especially with so many people being out of work. Exchanging services or goods for other services is a great way for each party to fulfill a need.

There is a website also that I think is pretty neat too.

http://www.freecycle.org/

They have different communities set up in different areas. The most active one near us that I have found is in Murfreesboro. Everything on the site has to be absolutely free of charge.

If you have items that you no longer want or need you can post them there and maybe somebody else can use them or search for something you may need.

Dianatn - I was an active member of FreecycleJax (Jacksonville, FL) when I was stationed down there. It's a great setup, but the problem with that is that you get loads of people that simply post what they're wanting over and over again. It was a great way to clear out the attic and garage though.

It is a great idea, my husband and I were building on to our house about 10 years ago, my husband did all the constrution and plumbing but couldn't do the electical so he asked around and found a electrician who wanted a deck built. So my husband built his deck and he did our electric. But I'm sure the government will not like not getting tax money out of the bargin, and they will come up with a way to tax you on it if it becomes popular.

I think there is a tax setup for bartering when it gets to a certain scale and seems geared to avoiding giving Uncle Sam what he needs to survive.

Otherwise,I think even the government recognizes this as a good idea.

Similarly,I don't think the I.R.S. had any problems with a whole town deciding to become a church with all its residents as the clergy.

It just wasn't going to let a few mail-order ordinations turn a place the size of Shelbyville become one,big,tax-exempt enclave.

They'll always find a way for us to render unto Caesar but if we can find a way to help one another while we're at it,that just means more prosperity for everyone.

Barter is frugal,friendly and practical.

What's not to like?

I love to barter trades and I do often. It would be nice though if I found more locals to barter with.

As far as taxes go, if I trade (just for an example) $100 worth of my time working on someone's computers for $100 worth of someone else's time helping me work on my car, then there is no gain for either one of us. Therefore there are no taxes owed. If I were to trade $100 worth of my time working on someone's computer for a $1000 car, then I would owe taxes on the extra $900. This, of course, is my interpretation of how taxes work for bartering. I am certain that if I am wrong, there is someone out there that will let us all know.

Now, I have been tossing around the idea of generating a database for bartering in this area. If you have a particular skill or service that you can perform well (G-rated only, please) and would be interested in starting this up, let me know bedfordbarter@yahoo.com and I'll work on getting this started.

Sorry I wasn't at the computer when you contacted me last night. Calling me is your best bet in getting ahold of me.

"If you have a particular skill or service that you can perform well (G-rated only, please)..."

I literally just laughed out loud at that.

Nobody'sFool - I had to throw that part in...you never know what people are going to want to offer for "trade".
