Since the state Legislature has solved everything else...Posted Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at 10:14 PM
Now that the Tennessee General Assembly has solved all of our state's major issues (roads, unemployment, taxes, education, and crime) they have decided to tackle slavery. That's right, our legislators (ok, Gilmore from Nashville) are spending their precious time deciding whether or not to "Express profound regret for the enslavement and racial segregation of African-Americans".
Don't get me wrong, slavery is one of the worst things that I believe you can do to a human being, but our legislators feel the need to bring up the same issues over and over and over and...well, you get the point. EVERYBODY that is not a complete imbecile realizes that slavery is wrong. You would think that the people who run this state would find a better use of their time (on our dime). It seems there is a lot these days done with my dime I am none to pleased about.
You'd think one might fit in apologizing for past mistakes and curing/preventing current ones.
If folks avoid apologizing or even acknowledging sins,it shows they refuse to accept the consequences of their actions.
(Even if the transgressions happened decades earlier, admitting the evil of a Holocaust,Trail of Tears,Tuskegee Syphillis project or slavery serves as a warning not to do anything that might fit with that list.)
But,if discussions of apologies and reparations, naming a state bug, etc. are used as busywork to step around the difficult issues we face, then we are trivializing those matters and, again, avoiding responsibility.
We deserve public servants who can take the lead in admitting fallability and corrupt character and even tell us when they feel confused and overwhelmed over the tasks that lie before them.
But,then, they need to take a deep breath and dive in to looking at what needs to be done, finding those competent to deliver solutions and spending the time, energy and money to get things accomplished.
Dealing with the no-brainers may be a comfortable and even necessary respite for our leaders but,at some point, they need to risk the interference and contempt that come with doing the right thing at the right time for the right reasons.
Otherwise, some surviving remnant of our government may have to express remorse in the future for today's neglect.
I agree that slavery was a horrible thing to happen to anyone. But you have to realize that there are white people who worked for almost nothing back in those days also. My Dad got up at three oclock in the morning to milk cows then worked in the fields all day until time to milk again.
All he got was a house that the windows rattled when you walked across the floor-no water or bathroom. But he made do and was thankful for what we had.
