United Way of Bedford County offered free flu shots at Walgreens on Monday. From left are Laketia Haley, receiving the vaccine from pharmacist Jennifer Feldhaus, and store manager Jennifer Daemon. A limited number of vouchers for free flu shots are still available by calling the United Way office at 931-684-6685. Individuals may call for and pick up a voucher at the United Way office and take it by Walgreens to take advantage of this offer.

Charles Marsh "Chock" Woodruff Jr., a researcher with the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas, received a 2016 Outstanding Educator Award at the recent 2016 Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies (GCAGS) Annual Convention held in Corpus Christi, Texas. Woodruff, a Shelbyville native, is the son of Charles M. and Isabelle Woodruff and is a graduate of Shelbyville Central High School (Class of 1962) and Vanderbilt University (Class of 1966). He received the award "in recognition of outstanding contributions to the education and training of geologists." The award also recognizes those who have inspired students and whose publications have exhibited creative thinking and analysis. (University of Texas website photo)

Bedford County schools are observing Career Week, and Eakin Elementary is hosting speakers to talk to students about their future. On Monday, Ivan Jones, director of Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Shelbyville, spoke. He discussed making decisions about careers, and specifically mentioned welding, electricity and nursing.
