When a fatal fire took place in Unionville in late September, David Melson, right, and John Carney responded quickly. In recognition of their great effort to deliver the facts fast, the Associated Press presented Melson, T-G copy editor, and Carney, T-G city editor, with a 2012 instant citation award. The award reads, "When the AP Nashville bureau learned about the fire in the rural area about 90 minutes south of Nashville, the breaking news supervisor checked the member's website and found a superb image from the blaze. When he called the paper, Carney agreed to share images on cycle and Melson sent the photos to the New York photo desk within minutes, literally about the same time the desk supervisor in Nashville alerted New York they were coming."
