Lauren Warren, a graduate of Shelbyville Central High School, won this autographed guitar during the Farmers Insurance giveaway at last month's Rascal Flatts concert in Nashville. The epiphone acoustic guitar was autographed by all the group members of the popular country band.

Students at Eakin Elementary have been Celebrating Red Ribbon Week and making the commitment to stay drug-free. In Guidance Class students learned the dangers of cigarettes, inhalants and prescription medication and what those drugs can do to their body. All first through fifth graders signed the "Me Drug Free" commitment board after participating in the guidance lesson. Each day was a dress up day. The dress up days consisted of Crazy Hat Day, Sports Day, Dress Crazy (Halloween) Day, Red Day, and Eakin T-shirt/Color Day. All students' names were placed in a drawing for drug free items such as jump ropes, yo-yo's, basketball hoops, and thermos. These 10 students' names were drawn. The children at Miss Judie's Daycare took part in a Trike-a-thon to raise money to help the children at St. Jude's Hospital. The daycare children and their parents also learned trike and riding-toy safety. The daycare raised $2,735 for this cause.

Local farmer David Gordon visited Miss Judie's Daycare with one of his lambs. The children had been studying about animals and this visit helped them in their learning.

Firefighters from the Shelbyville Fire Department visited Miss Judie's Daycare and taught the children about fire safety and gave them fire helmets and a tour of a fire truck.

Eakin Elementary celebrated Thanksgiving with family, friends, and teachers last week. In a two-day event, visitors were treated to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with entertainment provided by each grade level. Preschool student Olivia Lankford enjoyed dressing up as an indian.

Central High School student, Michael Mayberry, won the local VFW Post 5019 Voice of Democracy scholarship competition. Mayberry wrote and recorded an essay on the theme, "Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?" He is now eligible to compete in the district competition. Family Support recipients from six counties participated in a walk, held in Shelbyville, to raise funds and show their support for the program. Thirty-seven were on hand enjoying the sunshine, fellowship and homemade cookies. The walk, a first-time fundraiser for the Family Support Program and open only to FS recipients, raised $915, which will go toward assisting those waiting for services. The Family Support Program helps 198 individuals with severe or developmental disabilities in Bedford, Coffee, Franklin, Lincoln, Marshall and Moore counties. Sammie Wells, Victoria Ellis and Kamie Clark lead the way.
