The Shelbyville Garden Club donated $200 to Bedford Builds Habitat for Humanity for landscaping of its two newest homes on Nutmeg Drive. The funds allowed for the purchase of 10 foundation bushes, two crepe myrtles, two garden hoses, nozzles and sprinklers. Calsonic Kansei gave a generous donation to Cascade Elementary in support of enabling as many of the school's teachers as possible to attend the presentation of the Blue Ribbon Award for school achievement in Washington, D. Southside also had a visit from the cast of "Duck Dynasty." Fourth grade teachers, Susan Mason, Corey Bates and Angela Pridmore were a big hit on Halloween.
Southside had a special visit from the two presidential candidates on Halloween. Mekhi Burdette, aka Barack Obama and Jarrett Vincent, aka Mitt Romney are ready for battle on Nov. 6. What did the candidates have to say? "Vote for me!"
Southside teachers get in on the act for Halloween. Second grade teachers, Cyndi Crigler, Jamie Green and Lynna Miller dressed as characters from Little Red Riding Hood.
The gymnasium was full of Egyptian princesses for Southside's Halloween costume parade. Layla Barton, Lucie Abbott, Diana Campos and Kenzie Carter simply look stunning.
Southside Elementary recently held a fundraiser for their music department. Jessica Morel, Southside's music teacher, headed up the event which included a Chili Supper and a Sock Hop for Southside 3rd-5th graders. The Salamander Singers, a choir made up of 4th and 5th graders, performed to the delight of the chili supper patrons. A little over $1,600 was raised to buy music for the Salamander Singers and instruments for the general music classes. Morel was very pleased with the turnout and hopes to make it an annual event. "The teachers and parents really came to through to help with everything from decorating and to making desserts to serving and cleaning up." says Morel. "It was a great night!" Morgan McCormick, Haley Newman, Andrea McTigue, Ty Swadder, Madison Madden and Lila Hall all dressed up for Sock Hop.

A potato monster was on the loose at Cascade Elementary School this week, and fifth grade students had to disguise a potato so the monster wouldn't recognize its prey. Students had to write a paragraph describing their potato, could use any theme they wished, but could not cut the potato. Hunter Palmer disguised his potatoes as the stars of Duck Dynasty and took first place honors.

The potato monster won't be looking for a turkey for another few weeks - Taylor Ledbetter won third place in a decorating contest for Cascade fifth graders.

Shelbyville city councilman Sam Meek, right, got to have a few words with Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam earlier this month during the 59th Annual Economic and Community Development Governor's Conference in Nashville. Councilman Meek attended a session of tourism, while council members Kay Rose and Jo Ann Holland sat in on an event dealing with "Power and Practicality of Main Street/downtowns," and councilman Thomas Landers attended a session on agribusiness development in rural Tennessee.
