Kacey Smith and her "Pit Crew" band performed for a sold out show on Saturday. The show was a practice session for Smith's upcoming performance March 14 and 15 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Kids across the county are celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss this week, including students from the Harris Head Start, who submitted this photo. Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American writer, poet, and cartoonist. He was most widely known for his children's books written and illustrated as Dr. Seuss. (Submitted photo)

The Shelby Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution had nearly 20 guests attending its award ceremony at the Horse Mountain Church recently. Students read their American history essays and were given certificates and gifts during the traditional George Washington Tea. Each winner's qualities must include dependability (truthfulness, honesty, punctuality), service (cooperation, helpfulness, responsibility) and patriotism (unselfish loyalty to American ideals).
