Shelbyville police officers Cody King, left, and Sgt. Bobby Peacock lower the American and Tennessee flags to half-mast Tuesday marking National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Six Shelbyville officers have died in the line of duty: officers Charles A. Henry and Redden G. Purdy, who were ambushed and shot to death in 1911 by a suspect released after an arrest for drunk and disorderly conduct; Chief Sumner A. Dillard, shot to death by a friend of a just-arrested suspect who was being driven away in a patrol car in 1936; officer Floyd Collins, who suffered a heart attack while driving his patrol car in 1985; Sgt. G.J. Jordan, killed in a 1995 traffic accident; and officer Melvin Claxton, who suffered a heart attack during a foot chase in 1999.
