The Tennessee State Chili Cookoff, sanctioned by the International Chili society, was held Saturday on the square, in conjunction with the regular monthly Second Saturday Cruise-In. Among the judged categories, Preston Shaw of Parsons won the red chili division, while Don Cullman of Houston, Texas, won both the chili verde and salsa divisions. In the "people's choice" division, voted on by the public attending the event, Dicky Thorpe of Shelbyville took top honors, followed by the ACN of Shelbyville booth. Judges tasted Texas-style chili, with no beans or pasta, while in the "people's choice" division, the chili was required to contain beans or pasta.
