As part of the Public Safety and Department of Education School Safety program, Thomas Magnet School recently conducted an evacuation relocation drill for all teachers and students. In the event of a major disaster at the school, students and staff must have a place to relocate that is safe from the elements and can be used for an extended period of time. Calvary Baptist Church on Lane Parkway is the relocation facility for Thomas. For the drill, the staff escorted all of the students to and from the church with a rest period and water break at the church. Assisting in the evacuation drill were Bedford County Emergency Management Agency, Bedford County Emergency Medical Services, and Shelbyville Police Department. Shelbyville police and EMA personnel assist students and staff crossing Lane Parkway on their way to the church.
