The power of the Sun
Third graders from Marie Gilbert and Kristie Collier’s classes at Community Elementary School completed an extensive cross-curricular study about our solar system, galaxy, and the universe. During this unit, students discovered that our sun is the very reason there is life on Earth. Students learned that the sun is a very important resource, and used this knowledge to design and make solar cookers. To test the solar cookers, students made pizza bagels and put them into their ovens. Temperatures rose to at least 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Students were amazed to discover the condensation on the inside of their “window” from heat being trapped in the box. After cooking the mini-pizzas for over an hour, they were excited to notice that the cheese was melted and the pepperonis were cooked. It was finally time to eat, many students said that it was the best pizza they ever tasted.
