First United Methodist Church held its annual holiday luncheon and bazaar on Friday. The event is a fundraiser for, and organized by, the United Methodist Women, but it is an all-hands-on-deck affair involving numerous men and women from the church. The menu, and even the recipes, have remained the same for decades. Turkeys are farmed out to various families in the congregation, cooked in home kitchens, and then returned to the church to be carved. The turkey is served cold, along with dressing, peas, and a congealed salad, with prune cake for dessert. In addition to the luncheon, there are craft and bake sale rooms for shopping. The event always draws a huge crowd. Since many of the church members are working, the crowd is often dominated by members of the community. Former pastors, or members who have moved away from Shelbyville, often pay a return visit for the bazaar. The funds raised are given by the UMW to a variety of community and mission projects.
