Library salutes summer readers

Argie Cooper Public Library held a end-of-summer event last Friday for its summer reading program. A large crowd gathered at Eakin Elementary School to enjoy an evening that included awards, face painting, games and a planetarium presentation by Billy Hix. A total of 1,022 kids participated in the program and read a record 17,597 books. Other participants included 10 teens (reading 53 books) and nine adults (reading 84 books), according to library records. Youth services director Jessica Osborne presents the winners of the summer reading program: Kayden Mersing, first place, record 1,030 books read; Cameron Mersing, second place, 910 books read; and Falynne Blackwell, third place, 513 books read. Stacy Jefferson was the adult summer reading winner. Daniel Vaughn and Rosario Jimernez won the teens division. Maddie Thornberry read the most chapter books. Every child who read 100 or more books received a prize.
