My father had a real good sense of humor because on Thanksgiving Day he
would make several pumpkin pies and have a pie eating contest.
There was five of us and the contest was to see who could eat their pie
the fastest. And the winner got to eat all of the pie that wasn't eaten by the
other four children. Not much of a prize but it was fun.
I was the only child and we lived in the city. So on Thanksgiving we went to my grandmother who lived in the country. I got to see all of my cousins and play with them and eat good food.
We never had the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. But I remember us killing the old red rooster and having chicken and dumplings. But thinking back to those times when we didn't have a lot, we sure did have a lot of love and togetherness.
I moved around a lot but all seemed to still get together. No matter what state
we were in, my family still got together the best we could. We had turkey and all the things that went with that and had a good time and enjoyed the food and each other.
My mother, father and sister and I would eat turkey, dressing and fruit salad and
other things. I really remember that fruit salad. I really like that.
We still had our chores to do on the farm; milk cows, work with the tractor but
we still got together for fellowship an fun. But we like chicken instead of
We all went, my mother, father and sisters and brother, to my grandmother's in
Tracy City. One year her son, who was in the war, came home to surprise
her on Thanksgiving.
Getting together with everyone even though some were out of state was special. There was nine of us kids and getting together, cooking a big meal and gathering together at the table was special.
We were lucky to get turkey on Thanksgiving because there was so many of
us. My mother was wheelchair bound and we all got together and did the cooking but we were all together, that was what counted.
