Help / Frequently Asked Questions

Submitting news and announcements

Submitting news or photos by e-mail
When submitting press releases or news tips by e-mail, please keep the following in mind:

  • Don't use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, which forces us to retype everything you send. Use normal punctuation whenever possible.

  • Send photos in JPEG format if possible. Send the photo and text as separate attachments; do not embed the photo into a Word document.

  • Word documents are permissible, but it's even easier if you simply include your text in the body of the e-mail. Please don't send Microsoft Publisher documents, which we can't open.

A list of e-mail addresses appears here. Please use an individual e-mail address rather than our old newsroom address.

Thanks for your cooperation!

How do I submit obituary information?
Obituary information must be submitted to us by the funeral home, to ensure accuracy and avoid family disputes. If there is no funeral home involved, please call or stop by to discuss the situation further.

Our normal free obituaries are for cases where there is a direct local connection to our coverage area. This can mean any of the following:

  • The deceased lived in our coverage area at the time of death;
  • A direct survivor of the deceased (parent, sibling, child) currently lives in our coverage area;
  • The funeral services or burial will be held in our coverage area, or a local funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

The T-G's news department publishes normal obituaries free of charge. Some families purchase paid obituaries so that they can include extra information that would not normally be allowed in the news department's obituary format, or because the local connection does not qualify for a free obituary as described above. Contact our display advertising department for more information about paid obituaries.

How do I submit a birth announcement or "Half Pint"?
A birth announcement, with no photo, will be published free of charge within one month after the child is born. Call or visit the T-G news department or complete the form online.

The decorative style of birth announcement (for example, with a baby carriage border) is a paid advertisement. Contact our display advertising department at (931) 684-1200 for rates and availability.

A "Half Pint" is a photo of a young child. It costs $5 to have a "Half Pint" photo published. Stop by the front desk at the Times-Gazette, 323 East Depot St., and ask for a "Half Pint" form and further information.

    Advertising

    What is the difference between "display" advertising and "classified" advertising?
    Display advertising appears throughout the newspaper. It refers to graphically designed ads, often with logos, photos, drawings or borders.

    Classified advertising, often referred to as "want ads," are text-only ads that appear in a particular section of the paper, classified according to type (Help wanted, real estate, for sale, want to buy, etc.). An ad with a border around it is considered a display ad even if it's located on the classified pages.

    The Times-Gazette, like most newspapers, has separate departments for selling classified and display advertising, so you can save yourself time and confusion if you ask for the appropriate department when you call.
