Can-sas arrives: Canned food drive a success (11/28/10)
The holidays are approaching, the economy remains weak and the shelves at Good Samaritan are bare. Or they were bare -- until last week. Each year, Shelbyville Central High School's Great Canned Food Drive seems to come at a time when Good Samaritan is in great need, and this year was no exception. This year's theme, "Toto, I don't think we're in Can-sas anymore," trumped last year's totals with nearly 27,000 items delivered to Good Sam following the Nov. 19 food drive...
Churches work together to help Good Sam (11/28/10)
Good Samaritan is one of the oldest non-profit organizations in Bedford County. It was established in 1987. Four churches, St. William Catholic Church, First Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, and Cannon United Methodist Church, along with the Ministerial Association, who was to be the liaison between Good Samaritan and the churches of Bedford County, formed a committee deciding to donate funds to a centralized helping agency known as Good Samaritan...

Students recognized two members of Shelbyville Central High School's staff during the school's annual food drive last week. Following the announcement that the students had collected more than 26,000 items to donate to the local Good Samaritan, students continued their cheers as Louise Armstrong was named one of two recipients of this year's Giving Tree Award...

GMA profiles one of the Pepsi grant winners to feature each month and will show a photo montage of Cannon's "Clothe the N.A.K.E.D. Prom Date" program....
Walk of Faith (04/04/10)
Bedford County Ministerial Association held its annual Stations of the Cross (also known as "Way of the Cross" or "Cross Walk") Friday through downtown Shelbyville. The interdenominational, bilingual event, held each Good Friday, features seven stations where readings about Christ's passion and death were delivered in both English and Spanish. Some were delivered by members of the clergy, others, especially the Spanish versions, were delivered by volunteers...
Good Samaritan needs more than just food (10/15/09)
In these hard times, Good Samaritan has had its hands full trying to help out those in the community who need it the most. While they always accept donations of food, there are needs in other areas as well. Food drives that have already taken place have kept the shelves stocked at the non-profit organization, thanks to recent mentions in the Times-Gazette, as well as a lot of cash on hand to buy more foodstuffs when needed, according to director Cathy Miller....
Good Samaritan shelves are stocked but cash box needs help (09/18/09)
For once, the food pantry at Good Samaritan Association isn't in dire need -- but the coffers are. "We've got plenty of food right now," said Musa Alexander, who has been helping out at the local charity for many years now. "But it's going very fast. We do have a lot of fresh vegetables -- the people here in Shelbyville are so generous. When they find out through your paper that we need stuff, they come with bags and baskets -- and checks in their hands."...
