Small works both ends in Viq victory (High School Sports ~ 12/12/07)
EAGLEVILLE -- It was not pretty -- in fact, portions were downright ugly -- but the Community Viqueens worked their way out of a lethargic three-quarter funk to defeat Eagleville 41-29 in a District 9-A road win. Heather Small continues to play outstanding defense for the Purple and Gold and on this night led her team in scoring as well by pumping in 12 points... -
Defense carries Eaglettes in 8-AAA matchup (High School Sports ~ 12/12/07)
WINCHESTER -- It's been said time and time again. When Shelbyville Central's Golden Eaglettes hit the floor, they expect every team's 'A' game. There was no doubt that the Eaglettes' matchup at Franklin County was going to be a battle, but the visitors found a way on the defensive end of the court to claim a huge 57-47 District 8-AAA win and remain undefeated in district play Tuesday night... -
Metro isn't a cure-all
(Column ~ 12/12/07)
I read in the Elk Valley Times that Fayetteville and Lincoln County will have a referendum on consolidated city-county "metro" government Feb. 5. Metro is an issue that pops up from time to time here in Bedford County, and if our neighboring county passes it, no doubt it will be discussed again. Another of our neighbors, Moore County, is already metro...

First-half whistles halt; Eagles find way to win (High School Sports ~ 12/12/07)
WINCHESTER -- When you're playing one of the top teams in the district on the road and you're whistled for 17 fouls in the first half compared to the hosts' four, you should be trailing at the half -- and there's a very good chance you could lose the game... -
Champs stumble down the stretch, lose by 9 (High School Sports ~ 12/12/07)
CHAPEL HILL -- Watching the teams warm up beforehand it was apparent the crowd was in for a vintage Class A high school basketball game between rivals. A pair of schools that typically don't like one other between the lines engaged on the hardwood with the tallest player on the court possibly being 6-foot-2 depending on the shoes and hair style... -
Vikes fall in physical road trip (High School Sports ~ 12/12/07)
EAGLEVILLE -- Community dug themselves a deep hole early against Eagleville and spent the rest of the night scratching and clawing their way back before finally running out of juice to succumb 70-56 in a very physical District 9-A contest. Trailing 47-38 in the fourth quarter, a comeback effort was led by Dustin White and Kyle Dyer's 3-point baskets as well as some impressive defense by Josh Hull on Eagleville star Khameron Lillard, who was held to just one basket in the period... -
District power downs Lady Champs (High School Sports ~ 12/12/07)
CHAPEL HILL -- Hitting the road to face a Forrest team that won the Class A state title two years ago, made it back to Murfreesboro last year and had a record of 56-15 over that time looks pretty intimidating on paper. Add to it that Cascade was without coach Chad Spencer, who was finishing off his two-game suspension after being ejected from Friday night's loss to Eagleville, and the Lady Champions opened the door to the gym to find a brick wall staring back... -

Sinkhole threatens home (Local News ~ 12/12/07)
The expression "that sinking feeling" is taking on new life for Margaret Little as a large sinkhole slowly but steadily eats away at the foundation of her Shelbyville home. The hole, which appears to be at least 18-20 feet long and several feet deep, has already exposed much of the foundation on one side of Little's Blue Ribbon Parkway residence. One of the supports has little ground left beneath it while the sinkhole is coming within inches of another... -
