Bone named to TSSAA Hall of Fame (High School Sports ~ 02/11/09)
Former Shelbyville Central High principal and Bedford County School Superintendent Mike Bone is among 13 new members of the TSSAA Hall of Fame to be inducted April 18. Bone served for over 40 years in Bedford County, earlier as a teacher and boys basketball coach at Community High and Shelbyville Central before becoming assistant principal, then principal at Central before being elected as school superintendant... -

Bill Griffy, 74, of Chapel Hill, died Tuesday morning at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lawrence Funeral Home, Chapel Hill, with the Rev. Larry Chatman officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Swanson Cemetery in Chapel Hill. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today.

Mary Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Crowell, 99, of Shelbyville, died today at Glen Oaks Convalescent Center. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Crowell's Chapel Lutheran Church Cemetery with Lew Kidd officiating. No visitation will be held. Gowen-Smith Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

BCEMS board resists cutting supervisors

Bedford County Emergency Medical Services board of directors resolved Monday night to tell county finance officials that the board can't support any budget plan that would require putting shift supervisors back on ambulances on a regular basis. The resolution was specifically prompted by the recent discussion of how to open BCEMS's new Airport Industrial Park station. A resolution that could have helped the Walking Horse Hotel get liquor by the drink died for the lack of a motion at the Monday night meeting of the Wartrace Board of Mayor and Aldermen. "It is legal to 'brown bag it' in Wartrace," said Mayor Don Gallagher. "It's not legal to sell liquor by the drink. The only way to legalize liquor by the drink is by a referendum and to have a referendum you have to have 1,000 voters. Obviously, we can't do that."... -

What a weekend! I didn't get any housework done. The laundry is still threatening to overtake the den, and the dishes sat in the dishwasher until a new load was ready to clean. I don't care. I spent Saturday hiking a grassy hill and sitting in a camp chair, letting the sun soak in. I know this isn't the "real" spring -- there are probably more frosts and snows and cold, gray days ahead, but I'll take what I can get, especially after the miserable January we just had...

Van Buren County shot the lights out from 3-point land to push Community to the limit but the Vikings were up to the challenge. The Eagles connected on eight treys but the Vikes were a little more consistent around the basket as Wylder Norris and Justin Stallings combined for a Senior Night total of 41 points to hang on for a 70-60 win...
