Looking for a kernel of truth
(Column ~ 05/03/09)
Corn is the root of all evil. At least, it is until the next root of all evil can be found. I love the way food trends come and go and we lap up every bit of information and misinformation they feed us and swallow it. And keep it down. I'm just as guilty as everyone else. I went fishless for nearly three years because I was afraid of mercury levels. I -- the queen of caffeine -- stopped drinking coffee for the short time it was on the suspect list...

I'll write my speech when I get around to it
(Column ~ 05/03/09)
I'll be the first to admit it. I am the world's worst procrastinator. I'm not sure how this happened, because as a child and young adult I was always ahead of myself, always prepared, on time, on target -- with plenty of time to spare. Some people would say I was a worrywart, some would say I was wise beyond my years...

Meaningful Mother's Day gifts (Features ~ 05/03/09)
She's changed your diapers, put up with your tantrums, been a sounding board and advice giver -- and she has loved you unconditionally. When May comes around each year, you scramble to the store at the last minute to buy a gift for your mom, or maybe you send her flowers... -
Letters to the Editor, May 3
(Letter to the Editor ~ 05/03/09)
To the editor: How safe are our kids in local day care? As I was reading the April 29 paper, I see where a large meth lab was busted by cops. (So first, congrats to SD and DTF.) But my concern is the female who was recently arrested for promotion of methamphetamines manufacturing and possession of drug paraphernalia. That's not even the worst of it. She works at a local day care...

(Local News ~ 05/03/09)
A change in environmental standards for diesel engines may make the kind of truck chassis used for ambulances hard to come by during 2010, and so Bedford County Financial Management Committee voted Tuesday night to recommend that Bedford County Emergency Medical Services purchase a new chassis now, even if it can't be used right away...

'Super' effort leaves Shelbyville much cleaner
(Local News ~ 05/03/09)
"Super" is how Shelbyville's public works director described last week's city-wide spring clean-up, with some residents beating workers to the curbside to pick up items they wanted. Director Mark Clanton said that in the four days the city held the clean-up, 133 loads of material were hauled away, as opposed to 86 loads during last year's event...

Danny Hwang and Zach Wagner both came through with hat tricks to help Webb trounce EastMiddle Region foe St. Andrew's-Sewanee 7-0 in Bell Buckle on Thursday. Daniel Hoover booted home the other score for the Feet (12-3, 3-1 East/Middle). Hwang, Wagner, Josh Ferrell and Austin Wilson each had an assist. Goalkeeper Zach Crownover swatted away three saves... -
Irvine returns to 'Dinner: Impossible'
(Column ~ 05/03/09)
Robert Irvine is back. Irvine was the original subject of the Food Network show "Dinner: Impossible," but was let go in 2008 after questions surfaced about whether he had padded his resume and claimed achievements that were not accurate. He was replaced by Michael Symon, one of Food Network's "Iron Chefs," but viewers just didn't like Symon as well as Irvine, and now Irvine and Food Network have put their differences behind them and Irvine is back on the show...
