James Buford Cyree, 92, of Morrison, a native of Flat Creek, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 at his home, Funeral services were held Saturday at Coffee County Funeral Chapel in Manchester with Darrell Day officiating. Burial followed at Hurricane Cemetery in Moore County.

She told a home health nurse several days later she remembered sitting on the edge of her bed late at night, then had no further memory until awakening cold and in the floor later Wednesday, Dec. 26 with the back door open...

Car Club gives back (Local News ~ 01/02/13)
Celebration City Car Club hosted the largest Antique Automobile Club of America dual meet to date over the summer, attracting thousands of people from all over the country. The car club is non-profit; thus club members carefully selected seven local agencies to benefit from the proceeds of the successful meet. Vision check: Lions Club conducts screenings (Local News ~ 01/02/13)
The Shelbyville Lions Club is conducting eye screenings at local schools for the 2012-2013 year. The Lions are responsible for screening children in the fourth grade at all local schools, plus the kindergarten classes and local day cares. The club has done this preventative program for many years. Shown is Lions Club member Katie Guthrie, Region III chair and secretary for the local club, screening a child at Eakin Elementary School recently. Lions Club member Edward Huffman Jr. and his wife, club member Rita Huffman, are chairs of the eye screening program in local schools. A historical association is inviting students to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by creating posters commemorating one of his most famous speeches. The Gilliland Historical Resource Center Inc. is sponsoring a poster contest marking the Aug. 28, 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech that Dr. King presented on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C... -

Participants in a non-scientific poll at the Times-Gazette web site chose the unresolved house fire involving two children whose fate is unknown as the top local story of 2012. Tracy to seek House seat

State Sen. Jim Tracy was scheduled to announce his candidacy for the 4th District U.S. House of Representatives today at a midday press conference in Murfreesboro. The election will be held in 2014. Tracy, a Republican from Shelbyville, will run for the seat currently held by Republican Scott DesJarlais, a physician from South Pittsburg. He's the second Republican to announce interest in challenging DesJarlais for the seat, with the current session of Congress not even started yet...

Josie Kate Pickle Troupe, 71, of Richmond died Monday morning after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Jimmy Gray officiating. Burial will follow at Willow Mount Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday.

Revisiting the e-reader

Back in April, I wrote a column about how much I was enjoying my e-reader (a Kindle) and pointing out some of the places from which books can be downloaded. That was less than a year ago, but judging from some of my friends' online activity there were a number of people who got e-readers or tablets for Christmas this year and who are therefore getting into e-books for the first time. So perhaps the topic bears revisiting, with an apology to those of you for whom it's old news...
