Microsoft is about to stop supporting Windows XP, which could leave it vulnerable to certain types of viruses and attacks. Some third-party anti-virus programs will continue to work, but without Microsoft making upgrades and patches to the basic operating system the risk of infection is greater...

Hix honored by astronomical society (Local News ~ 03/26/14)
Billy Hix of Shelbyville was honored with the Master Outreach Award from the American Astronomical League. The presentation took place during a March 21 meeting of the Von Braun Astronomical Society in Huntsville, Ala. To qualify for this award, Hix had to conduct at least 50 public outreach programs during the past year. Hix works to inspire a love for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education among youth. During the past year, Hix has worked with over 10,000 students in school systems across the Motlow State Community College service area. Hix is a professor of education at Motlow and a teacher liaison for the Colorado-based Space Foundation. $9K bill may go unpaid

Bedford County Financial Management Committee is skeptical of a request that the county pay for $9,000 of extra work on a Safe Routes to Schools project near Harris Middle School. Littlejohn Engineering has presented a request to the county for an additional $9,000 for the contractor -- who wasn't specifically identified during Tuesday night's committee discussion -- who worked on sidewalk projects near the school paid for as part of a Safe Routes to Schools grant...

Harriett Louise Cosgrove Burrow, 76, of Shelbyville died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Christian Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Jimmy Gray officiating. Burial will follow at Willow Mount Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday.
