Deciding not to decide: Part 2
(Column ~ 08/31/14)
I wrote a column sometime last year that talked about how hard it is to make even the most simplistic consumer choices because we are flooded with so much information. Little did I know that recently I would spend two weeks going back and forth on whether or not I should purchase something...

Make your library connection
(Column ~ 08/31/14)
I have always found libraries and book stores to be good places to look for buried treasure; maybe not the kind that will make you wealthy, but the kind of treasure that will richen your imagination. I am also one of those Internet surfers who is led from one thing to another until I am miles from the subject I intended to research...

Remembering Fred's Memphis Mardi Gras
(Column ~ 08/31/14)
My friend, Fred West, organized the best Mardi Gras parade I have ever been to. It was really my favorite parade of all time. There was a marching band, brightly colored floats, a Mardi Gras King and Queen, balloons and beads, lots of multi-colored beads...

Kale turns pasta into nutrient-dense delight (Features ~ 08/31/14)
As a child, I was an incredibly picky eater. I wasn't just the kind of kid who didn't like to eat vegetables; I was the kid who would have a panic attack if her green beans and mashed potatoes came within an inch of each other on her dinner plate. I have since then become a little more relaxed about whether or not my food touches. ... -
Let the children walk on, too (Features ~ 08/31/14)
The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration isn't the only horse show that occurs in Shelbyville during the last week of August. The kids at Mrs. Judie Pope's Daycare have a horse show of their own. Mrs. Judie Pope, a lifelong Shelbyville resident, has owned Mrs. Judie's Daycare for 44 years. Pope has always had a love for children, but she as many Shelbyville-natives do, also has a love for the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration... -
God's hand was there
(Column ~ 08/31/14)
God is good, and He is present with us. While we don't see seas parting or bushes burning, God is active in this world. Don't believe me? Just look at the photo of my old car. This Nissan Versa was my mode of mobility until last Monday. I was driving to work from Murfreesboro like any other morning, looking ahead to covering The Celebration later in the day. ...

Slow start hurts Feet against Sacred Heart
(High School Sports ~ 08/31/14)
An early deficit proved too much for the Webb School Feet to dig themselves out of Friday evening in their 2014 home opener against Sacred Heart, falling 48-28. Trailing 26-0 with time ticking away in the first half, Jack Anderson put the Feet on the board with a 46-yard touchdown score, and a successful two-point converison by Nick Tilton...

Forrest too much for Champs (High School Sports ~ 08/31/14)
The Cascade Champions were down early, had a sputtering offense, and a defense struggling to stop the potent Forrest ground game in Friday's Week One rivalry game. Although the Champs trailed 21-0 at the end of one, Cascade eventually tied the game up, but in the end couldn't hold off a power run game by the Rockets and fell 35-21... -

On a perfect Friday night, the Community Vikings opened their home season hosting the visiting Silverdale Academy Seahawks. The Vikings started off slow, but fought back to keep the game close. In the end, however, Community could not hold on as the Seahawks won 38-21... -
Big 3rd sparks Eagle victory (High School Sports ~ 08/31/14)
Shelbyville Central scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter on the way to a 38-28 victory at Warren County on Friday night. It's the first win of the season for the Golden Eagles, who open the season with three straight road clashes. "This was a great win for us. We start the season with three games on the road and that's kind of scary, so to get a win following up last week's performance was big for us mentally," Central coach Jason Hardy said... -

I Am José becomes first repeat grand champion since 1956 (Local News ~ 08/31/14)
I Am José was named Tennessee Walking Horse World Grand Champion on a soggy Saturday night, becoming the first horse to repeat as champion since Go Boy's Shadow in 1955 and 1956. Casey Wright rode the entry for Billy and Debbie Woods of Lexington. Traditionally, the owners of the previous year's World Grand Champion donate a trophy for the new winner, and this year, the Woods were both the donors of that trophy and the recipients...
