Smoke pours from the windows of a Bates Street residence after it caught fire late Thursday afternoon. The fire appeared to have started in a bedroom from accidental causes, said Fire Marshal Jason Richardson of the Shelbyville Fire Department. Richardson did not know the name of the occupant of the home, described as “rental property.” An earlier blaze, reported at 2 a.m. Thursday, damaged the interior of a rental home on Lafayette Street.
