Eakin students give to canned food drive (Features ~ 06/11/17)
There is a school club at Eakin Elementary called the Einstein Ambassadors which consists of 12 students and two teachers, Kari Tisma and Christy Hughes. It is a group of twelve 4th and 5th grade students who were nominated by their peers who display exceptional behavior, excel in academics and are willing to do great things for the benefit of others to serve the community... -

high honors Alaina Pinvises, who attends International School Bangkok, won the Global Citizenship Award from the East Asia Regional Council of Schools. Land judging (Features ~ 06/11/17)
During the week of May 1-5, the Bedford County FFA of Shelbyville Central High School competed in the National Land Judging Event in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The team competed against 92 other team from around the United States. The team placed 35th in the nation. Team members are (from left): LayCee Raby, Gracie Parker, Hunter Lemmon and Brett Harden. Community service (Features ~ 06/11/17)
Community FFA scholarship recipients present a check for $2,000 to Camden Collins at Community High School Honors Day, as part of their season of service initiative. Camden lost his parents in a motor vehicle accident in Rockvale in January. This year Community FFA has donated nearly $6,000 for community service projects including scholarships, toy drives and pet food drives. BCEA awards $1,400 in scholarships to seniors (Features ~ 06/11/17)
The Bedford County Education Association honored several local students with college scholarships at the end of the school year. High school seniors could apply for the BCEA scholarship by submitting an essay, teacher recommendations, report card, and ACT or SAT scores. Someone once said, "I may have not avoided certain wounds in my life, but I do appreciate these scars because they are a constant reminder of my victories." I personally have surgical scars from my neck down to my legs. Thanks to open-heart surgery and the many surgeries that followed, my chest and abdomen look like a road map from all those scars...

On May 13, the Bedford County FFA of Shelbyville Central High School competed in the Tennessee FFA State Veterinary Science Event held at the University of Tennessee at Martin. City workers gain 3 percent raises; non-profits see decrease in donations

City employees are getting a raise in Shelbyville’s new budget. The city council passed the 2017-2018 budget Thursday. City employees will receive a 3 percent pay raise. The vote was 5-1 for the pay raise. Council member Henry Feldhaus voted no. Prior to the vote, Feldhaus questioned the raise because of the estimated price tag of about $225,000, which “in my opinion is double where it needs to be raised based on the cost of living increase,” he said...
