Every day is different for writer/editor
(Column ~ 02/18/18)
I'm often asked if I like "my new job" or "Are you glad you left the paper?" or "Do you miss the paper?" and I never quite know how to respond. Although I know anyone who asks has good intentions or means such questions as small talk, they are fully loaded questions that can't easily be answered in passing...

Celebrate President's Day with a biography
(Column ~ 02/18/18)
Tomorrow is President's Day. When I was a school kid, there were two school holidays in February; one on the 12th for President Lincoln's birthday and another on the 22nd for President Washington's birthday. Since 1971, with the passing of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, we have one floating holiday on the third Monday in February to honor all presidents. Interestingly enough, the Federal Government still calls the holiday "Washington's Birthday."...

Lemon and chicken and rice and eggs (Features ~ 02/18/18)
I've wanted to try avgolemono, a lemony Greek soup, ever since I first heard about it, and when I saw a few recipes for making the soup in an Instant Pot or other electric pressure cooker, I knew I'd eventually try one. Oh, I'm glad I did. If you don't yet have an Instant Pot, I've worked out (but not tested) stovetop directions for this dish as well, and included both of them below... -
Dolan: Talking about Legos (Features ~ 02/18/18)
For many parents of young children, Legos inevitably play a part in their daily lives. Whether its sharing in the joy of a newly built Millennium Falcon and Princess Castle or the pain of a tiny plastic brick on the sole of a barefoot at bedtime. All the same, the joys outnumber the pain in most things Lego... -

Bedford's own in the majorsIt is time for baseball spring training to begin in Florida and Arizona. When local sports fans talk about Bedford County's major league baseball heritage the names of Chuck Taylor and Rex Brothers come to mind. But long before those two stepped on a mound in a major league park, there was another Shelbyville pitcher toiling in the majors -- George Neely McConnell, who played for the New York Highlanders/Yankees, the Chicago Federals (Whales) of the Federal League and the Chicago Cubs in the early 1900s. ... -
