Father-and-daughter chili competitors (Local News ~ 10/11/18)
Dicky and Ellie Thorpe of Shelbyville were among the competitors at the 2018 ICS World Championship Chili Cookoff held last month at Gateway Motorsports Park in St. Louis. Dicky qualified for the event in the Homestyle Chili category, and also entered the People’s Choice competition, while Ellie, his daughter, was entered in the Youth division. The Thorpe family are enthusiastic participants in the ICS-sanctioned cookoffs held each summer on the Shelbyville square, and Dicky and his father-in-law, Buddy Koonce, frequently travel to ICS or Chili Appreciation Society International-sanctioned events elsewhere. The ICS championship is open only to those who qualify for it by their performance in a previous ICS-sanctioned cookoff. Although neither of the Thorpes placed at the championship, the family had a great time, enjoying the company of other contestants and visiting sights like the Gateway Arch. (Submitted photo) -
MTSU awaits final approval for new law school (Local News ~ 10/11/18)
Middle Tennessee State University's pending acquisition of the Valparaiso University law school, if approved by the state, would make MTSU the closest law school to Shelbyville. The governing boards of both MTSU and Valparaiso announced Wednesday that they have approved the transfer -- Valparaiso's board approved a transfer agreement last week, and MTSU's Board of Trustees approved it on Wednesday.
