Memories of Korley
(Column ~ 01/27/19)
It was back in 2011 when I watched in amazement as it seemed that the whole community came together for one of its own. It made me proud to be a part of this wonderful place called Shelbyville, Tennessee. When I would drive across town I would see signs in front of all kinds of businesses asking people to "Pray for Korley."...

Don't believe your eyes with high-tech fakery
(Column ~ 01/27/19)
Deep fakes. According to Great Britain's The Guardian newspaper, that's the next big threat to privacy rights, economic stability and the remaining vestiges of civil discourse. A "deep fake" is a high-tech forgery, using a machine learning technique called a generative adversarial network, or GAN. It's a realistic computer-generated replication of a person saying or doing whatever the "puppet master" software user wants them to say or do. Think Photoshop on steroids...

Creating a better routine
(Column ~ 01/27/19)
I heard once it takes about 21 days to make a new habit or routine stick. As I was sitting in the lobby of the Microtel this morning, still awaiting the repairs on my house (which was extensively damaged after a fire in December) I suddenly realized I have unintentionally created a new routine for myself...

Common courtesy, or lack thereof
(Column ~ 01/27/19)
I am so pleased to report that our anonymous power bill "angel" came through for the third year in a row. When I opened the most recent power bill, I found a $1000 credit had been paid for the third year in a row. If I had a name or an address, I would write a "thank you" note to whoever has given us this generous gift, but the folks at the power company office just smile and say we have an "angel." So, thank you to our "angel," whoever you are, for helping to keep the lights on and the computers humming away.. ...

(Some of) my favorite movies: Now, it's your turn! (Column ~ 01/27/19)
What's your favorite movie? For some people, it's an easy question to answer. For others, not so much. With the announcement of movie award nominees this week, I toyed with the idea of doing a story in which I would call various people around town and ask them to name their favorite movie. ... -

Feet get revenge, charge past BGA (High School Sports ~ 01/27/19)
BELL BUCKLE — Earlier this season, BGA dealt the Webb School its lone league loss in a hard-fought 66-60 decision. On Friday, the Feet (18-6, 11-1) got off to a hot start and evened the score, defeating BGA 74-57. “We had our concentration tonight. This is one of our better starts to a game. That team beat us early in the year,” Webb coach Jeff Mitchell said... -
Lady Champs overcome scoring drought, Moore County (High School Sports ~ 01/27/19)
Good teams find ways to win. After perhaps the most challenging quarter of basketball this season, Cascade saw a 27-20 halftime lead devolve into a near seven-minute scoring drought through the third quarter. Even with the lack of offensive production, Cascade (18-4, 6-1) did just enough and coupled with a key defensive stand, rallied back for the 47-38 win over the Moore County Raiderettes (7-17, 3-4) on Friday night... -
