How do I love thee? Let me count the movies
(Column ~ 02/10/19)
As a self-confessed Hallmark Channel addict, I hate to admit that I know that I am probably supposed to be acknowledging Valentine's Day in one way or another, but I am having a nasty bout of writer's block regarding the entire holiday. I'm not anywhere near being anti-romance, I am just struggling to find the right connection to show you how your library can help you to bring romance into your life. ...

I was sent on a mission
(Column ~ 02/10/19)
I had stopped by the home of one of my parishioners last Sunday after the church service. I went to check on Jon, who had gotten home from the hospital the day before. I was wanting to see how he was progressing after hip-replacement surgery. Jon and his wife, Brenda, and I had a nice visit, and then we prayed together and I said goodbye...

'Politics' in many situations
(Column ~ 02/10/19)
Politics -- it's a word that is heavily on my mind this (Wednesday) morning. Given last night was the State of the Union Address, it might seem like an obvious thing to be thinking about, but the meaning behind such a common word is far more complex...

Questions nobody wants to hear on Valentine's Day
(Column ~ 02/10/19)
Valentine's Day is a time for exchanging sweet nothings and terms of endearment. It is an occasion for sharing candlelit meals and opening romantic gifts. It is an opportunity for igniting new sparks or basking in the warmth of comfortable, memory-filled long-term relationships...

All we are saying is, 'Give peas a chance' (Features ~ 02/10/19)
"Eat your peas!" Who didn't grow up with this tableside mantra? I have to admit, I was one of those kids who loathed green vegetables, especially peas. There were those evenings when you spent most of the family conversation time hiding the round oddities in a mound of cold mashed potatoes... -
These sweet potatoes are no hassle at all (Features ~ 02/10/19)
Hasselback potatoes are accordion cut potatoes bathed in butter and sprinkled with breadcrumbsand baked until crispy on the outside and creamy in the center. It is a technique that comes from Sweden and the Hasselbacken Restaurant in Stockholm. The slicing creates a mixture of a baked potato and the crispiness of roasted potatoes. They are fancy looking but relatively simple to make... -

February couldn't be a better month to combine chocolate with chili. The winning team of Heritage South Community Credit Union's annual chili cook-off, held Friday, took both ingredients all the way to the winner's circle. The three independent judges (including this reporter) selected for first place this year the chili recipe submitted by the Member Service department. We feature that recipe today... -
Taz from Looney Tunes lives on!
(Column ~ 02/10/19)
A speeding driver about knocked the passenger door off a utility worker’s vehicle while parked off the shoulder of Highway 82 South Friday morning. This is no laughing matter. The passing driver swooped around the passenger side of the vehicle miraculously before the driver opened his door. There was oncoming traffic heading to Shelbyville — one of those drivers being me!...

Methodists must weigh unity, integrity, compassion
(Column ~ 02/10/19)
Later this month, United Methodist leaders will gather in St. Louis for a special meeting which some say could determine the ultimate fate of the denomination. I’m an active United Methodist, and while I hope this column will be more explanation than opinion I want to be clear that any statements or observations I make are mine alone, and don’t represent anyone else...

Offense starts late, Viqueens suffer loss (High School Sports ~ 02/10/19)
NOLENSVILLE — For much of the first half in Friday night’s regular season finale at Nolensville, offense was plainly a struggle for the Community Viqueens. Despite mustering up just 13 first-half points, the Purple and Gold orchestrated a furious rally that cut the Lady Knights’ lead to three points on multiple occasions in the second half, but came up short in a 54-48 loss... -
Vikes fight but fall short (High School Sports ~ 02/10/19)
NOLENSVILLE — Viking coach Robbie Davis isn’t much for moral victories. That said, he was pretty pleased with how his team fought and competed to the bitter wire in a brutally hostile environment on senior night on Friday at Nolensville. Though his team continually found ways to make plays and stay in the game when it could have turned into a rout, the Vikings (16-11, 5-5) were just a defensive stop or two too short and fell 74-70 in the regular season finale... -

More rain’s ahead but no deep freeze
(Local News ~ 02/10/19)
This past week we enjoyed some spring-like weather across Bedford County with temperatures soaring into the 70s and wind gusts to 40 miles per hour — much like what we would expect in March, not February. Rainfall during the past week averaged about an inch to an inch and a half across the county, but we were fortunate because 4-inch rainfall amounts were recorded in Nashville with flooding. ...
