Davis claims Open Wheel win

Monday, May 24, 2004

A good crowd watched Shannon Davis grab the pole position -- with a lap of 14.357 -- in Duck River Speedway's Open Wheel Cup race Saturday night.

Davis battled Chad Bone and Randy Zeigler most of the way through the 30-lap feature. As the race wore on, though, it was clear that Davis was the class of the field. He went on to take the win -- and sole possession of the points lead -- dropping third-place finisher Bone to second in the Cup point standings at the halfway point of the six-race series. Steve Garner rode home second with Jason Mauer fourth and Zeigler fifth.

Other winners included Justin Maxwell, Pure Pony; Jason King, Rookie; Billy Harris, Late Model; Ron Dennis, Super Stocks, after Junebug Pomeroy was inititally declared the winner; Jeff Crowell, Outlaw Pony; and DeWayne Waid, Two-Barrel.
