About $2,800 raised for officer's medical expenses

The sunlight reflected in the chrome of more than 100 motorcycles almost blinded passersby as riders gathered across from the Shelbyville Police Department Saturday for the Polar Bear Ride. The event raised approximately $2,800 to help Lt. Mike Baker meet his medical and other expenses.

Baker, the lieutenant on the B-Night shift, sustained multiple injuries when a car pulled across his path into a driveway Dec. 7 as he rode his motorcycle while off duty. He was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he has had several surgeries for a crushed pelvis, multiple fractures and internal injuries.

Baker was scheduled to be transferred to a Winchester nursing home today.

Shortly after the cyclists pulled onto Lane Parkway, family members took a video and greetings from the riders to Baker at the hospital.

"I thank everyone for being so wonderful," Baker said from his hospital bed this morning. "I have a long road [ahead] and I am going to make it."
