If you drink, don't hurdle

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

It can be hard to jump a fence when you're drunk.

A Shelbyville man learned that lesson the hard way Saturday night, police said, as he attempted to escape a pursuing officer.

Felix Cortez Ortiz, 21, was standing near the Maplewood Drive home of Terry Pilkington when Officer Cody King arrived after being notified of someone attempting to open a door and window.

Ortiz, of Maple Street, tried to jump the fence but "fell on his stomach," King said, and was arrested.

Charges of evading arrest, aggravated criminal trespassing and public intoxication were filed against Ortiz.

Smell tells a story

A man stopped because his car's headlights were off at night admitted to having smoked a "joint" 10 minutes earlier, police said.

Officer Matt Griffy said he could smell marijuana on and in the car of Terry Allen Plant, 21, Henderson Road, during the 10:45 p.m. Friday traffic stop at the South Cannon Boulevard-Riverview Drive intersection.

Plant's car contained a bag containing 5.76 grams of marijuana, three packs of rolling papers and a butterfly knife, Griffy said.

Plant was charged with possession of schedule VI drug, first offense DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a prohibited weapon.
