Laughter is good medicine

Wednesday, June 29, 2005

I was laughing just now and realized how few people experience laughter on a daily basis. The number is small. I read that the average adult laughs four times a day. Let's just say I am above average. I will admit this.

"Hi, my name is Jamie and I am a laugher."

I think I may need some intervention. I can't go to comedy clubs because the comics can't concentrate enough to perform once I start laughing. You have to understand, I don't have a normal laugh nor do I have a quiet laugh. When I laugh the whole room knows it. Sometimes I even snort.

I have looked and there just doesn't seem to be a meeting for laughter addicts. I need to create an organization called "Laughers Anonymous." We will meet in places that evoke laughter so we can put to a test our new found strength in resisting the urge to laugh.

We will invite clowns and comics in order to guarantee we can handle any situation in life without bursting into laughter. We will become serious, solemn, rational and practical human beings. People will look at us and think, "That person is so professional and serious." We will rule the world. We will play the roles of politician, doctor, attorney ... journalist. You know, the professional people of the world ... the people who don't laugh.

That comment in itself makes me chuckle. Politicians laugh. In fact, if they didn't laugh they'd probably cry all the time. Jay Leno alone could make a politician crumble if she didn't have the ability to laugh.

People who go into politics must have the best sense of humors of all ... and we all know they must be skilled at smiling when they don't want to smile about anything.

It is also comical to imagine attorneys not laughing. Can you imagine someone calling your office because they need an attorney to represent them because they got high, caught a bale of hay on fire, felt guilty about it and called the police themselves to report the fire? I bet the attorney that got that call had a good laugh after telling the young man how much money he would need for a retainer. I would imagine attorneys laugh a lot ... take for instance Michael Jackson's attorney. He must have gone home laughing many days during that trial.

Dorris Lessing says, "Laughter is by definition healthy" and according to Jimmy Buffett, " If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane." We have all heard the old saying that laughter is good medicine. I totally agree. Next time you feel depressed or down surround yourself by people who make you laugh and watch how quickly your mood will change. Once you begin laughing you will feel better.

I have a feeling I am not going to recover from this laughter addiction. I also know that I don't want to recover. I am happy when I laugh and my laugh makes others laugh. I think the greatest accomplishment in my life would be to make everyone I come into contact with laugh ... and considering how crazy I am at times I don't think this is an impossible task.
