Officer uses taser on suspect

Tuesday, July 26, 2005
Scuffling suspects were subdued with a taser gun and shackles in weekend incidents involving Shelbyville police.

* The taser gun was used to calm Thomas Allen Burgess, 22, outside his home at Circle O Trailer Park, Railroad Avenue, early Sunday morning, police said.

Burgess was allegedly "using force...to keep from being arrested," Officer Matthew Griffy said. "He pushed away and tried to run back into his residence.

"I took him to the ground, he continued to be combative," Griffy said. "I used a drive-stun technique with the taser to his right calf" (in which the front of the gun touches the suspect instead of probes being shot into the skin) "and he became compliant and was taken into custody."

Officers were called to the home when Burgess and roommate Charles R. Gawthorp III, 22, were allegedly "screaming at each other," Griffy said.

When Griffy returned about 2:45 a.m. the men were outside the residence -- "highly intoxicated," according to police -- and were placed under arrest.

Burgess, charged with resisting arrest and public intoxication, was released on $4,000 bond. Gawthorp, who Griffy said did not resist arrest, was charged with public intoxication and released on $500 bond.

* An angry suspect was charged after allegedly attacking an officer while being arrested Friday night.

Roy Randy Farrar, 34, of Cedar Street, was charged with assault after allegedly punching Officer Rick Gann in the face and nose as he was being handcuffed.

Farrar kicked a rear window partially out of a patrol car moments later, Gann said, and was placed in shackles for transport to Bedford County Jail.

Officers were called to a Germantown Road residence about 9:30 p.m. after Farrar allegedly arrived drunk and was "belligerent, cursing and violent in the presence of women and a 2-year-old child," according to Gann.

Farrar was also charged with public intoxication, resisting arrest and destruction of private property, police said. He posted $13,500 bond.

A two-vehicle accident at the Whitthorne Street-Celebration Drive intersection in front of Calsonic Arena Friday afternoon left a passenger in one vehicle injured.

Marcus Merrell, 18, of Pass Road, was taken to Bedford County Medical Center after the 1:25 p.m. accident.

Merrell was in a van driven by Natasha D. Sims, 21, of the same address.
