Question over accident site explained

Saturday, October 22, 2005

A story in Thursday's T-G about a serious accident Wednesday on Railroad Road referred to "initial uncertainty" by dispatchers as to whether its location was inside or outside Shelbyville.

Bedford County Communications Center personnel were told specifically, but incorrectly, by a caller to 9-1-1 that the accident was on Railroad Avenue, director Cathey Mathis said Friday.

"The caller said Railroad 'Avenue' in the city," Mathis said. "He repeated Railroad 'Avenue' numerous times."

Railroad Avenue becomes Railroad Road at the Stanley Boulevard intersection near the eastern Shelbyville city limits. The accident site was approximately four miles east of Shelbyville.

Dispatchers correctly radioed the location they were given, Mathis said. Shelbyville police drove the length of Railroad Avenue and, eventually, to the accident site and aided county rescue workers. County authorities were searching Railroad Road at the same time.

The name of Railroad Road outside city limits was changed from "avenue" several years ago. Many longtime Bedford Countians continue to refer to the rural portion as "avenue."

Burglaries, thefts

A .22 caliber rifle and estimated $125 in change were taken from the home of Kenneth George Scott, Pepper Hill Road, between 12:30-2:30 p.m. last Tuesday, according to a Bedford County Sheriff's Department report released Friday.

Other thefts reported to area authorities:

* The compact disc player was stolen from a truck owned by Alberto Lozano Cruz of Shelbyville during the day or early evening Thursday at Park Trails Apartments, Green Lane.

Jose Palmeros Castro had borrowed the truck and parked it outside his home, police said.

A window was broken to gain entry.

* Another compact disc player was taken from a car belonging to Cynthia Edwards of Shelbyville while it was left at Daniel's Auto Clinic and Sales, Deery Street, between Oct. 5 and Wednesday.
