Wednesday, November 30, 2005

Allison Janney, who starred in "Our Very Own," a film shot in Shelbyville last year, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Film Independent's 2006 Independent Spirit Awards.

The nominations were announced Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. Winners of the Independent Spirit Awards, which recognize American independent features that are made for less than $20 million, will be presented March 4 in Santa Monica, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Other nominees in the category are Amy Adams, "Junebug"; Maggie Gyllenhaal, "Happy Endings"; Michelle Williams, "Brokeback Mountain"; and Robin Wright Penn, "Nine Lives."

The Independent Spirit Awards cover the West Coast's independent film scene, where the Gotham Awards deal with film produced on the East Coast.

According to Janice Cole, who was Shelbyville liaison for "Our Very Own," the film is to be screened on Dec. 5 in New York City as part of the continuing efforts to secure a distribution deal.

In September, the movie won the grand prize for Best Feature Film at the Bluegrass Independent Film Festival in Louisville, Ky., Shelbyville audiences were treated to a Hollywood-style premiere in August with several screenings held for local residents. The world premiere was held at the Los Angeles Film Festival this past June.

The semi-autobiographical movie is set in 1978 and stars Janney, Keith Carradine and Cheryl Hines, along with rising stars Jason Ritter, Autumn Reeser and Hilarie Burton.

In the film, five local teens are excited about the return of another Bedford County native, Sondra Locke, who starred with her then-partner Clint Eastwood in several films of the era, including "Any Which Way But Loose." The teenagers hope to follow the movie star out of Shelbyville, but at the same time, one of the group is facing a personal family crisis.
