William Christie, who lives near the crash site, told police Kelly M. Hudson, 23, Pleasant Way, was unable to remove her seat belt or open the car's door.
"He opened the door, took off the seat belt and dragged her to safety away from the vehicle," Officer Sam Jacobs of the Shelbyville Police Department said.
Hudson, who told police she'd had "several drinks," said she "didn't remember" how the crash with a van driven by Laterria C. Kelso, 25, Fayetteville, occurred about 2:05 a.m. near the Mac Street intersection.
Kelso remembered well. She told police Hudson was northbound in the southbound lane. Kelso blew her horn and attempted to swerve but Hudson steered in the same direction, Jacobs said.
Hudson told Jacobs she had been drinking with friends and was attempting to drive home.
"I already know I'm drunk," Hudson told Jacobs and a lab technician at Bedford County Medical Center on three different occasions.
Hudson was charged with DUI and violation of the financial responsibility law (no insurance).
Both drivers were treated at Bedford County Medical Center. Hudson was admitted with a broken leg, Jacobs said.
Principal charged
The principal of South Side Primary was charged with DUI after allegedly almost causing an accident Friday night on Madison Street, police said.
Michael DeWitt Vannatta, 42, Fairlane Drive, told SPD Officer Tracey Nelson he'd "had three beers."
Vannatta tested .26 on Shelbyville Police Department's breathalyzer device following his arrest, Nelson said.
"I observed a vehicle cross over the double yellow lines on Madison Street," Nelson said of Vannatta's truck. "The vehicle almost struck another vehicle and then almost struck the curb.
"I then turned on my blue lights and the vehicle took about a block and a half to two blocks to stop. I observed a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage...and bloodshot eyes."
Vannatta posted $2,500 bond at Bedford County Jail.
Car chase
A Shelbyville man was arrested on multiple charges after a car chase Monday night.
At 11:50 p.m. SPD Sgt. Charles Kimbril saw a red Saturn, northbound on Deery Street, run the traffic light at Madison Street without stopping.
The driver, later identified as William Robert Taylor III, 19, Graydon Street, reached 50 mph on Deery Street and 60 mph in a 30 mph zone while running "every stop sign" on Blue Ribbon Parkway during the chase, Kimbril said.
Trooper D'Angelo Inman of the Tennessee Highway Patrol backed up Kimbril.
Taylor fled on foot after wrecking at the Shoma Drive-Cherokee Trail intersection, Kimbril said, and was found hiding in a ditch on Amos Smith Road by Lt. Trey Clanton.
Charges of evading arrest and two counts each of reckless driving and driving on a suspended license were filed against Taylor, who was held at Bedford County Jail on $16,000 bond.
It was Taylor's second arrest of the holiday weekend. He was arrested shortly after noon Christmas Day when clocked at 54 mph in a 40 mph zone on Madison Street and charged with driving on a suspended license (for failure to satisfy citation) and violation of probation, Officer Josh Tolar said.
Back to jail
A man who pleaded with officers that he "couldn't go back to jail" was arrested Thursday for stealing a tape measure.
The man, identified by police as Robert Wayne Amos, 34, Davis Street, was initially confronted when Cathy Serrano, Elizabeth Street, discovered him leaving her garage after he parked his car in front of a neighbor's home.
"I was just looking," Amos told Serrano when asked why he was there, SPD Officer Charles A. Merlo Jr. said.
Serrano's husband, Raul Serrano, yelled at Amos to give back the tape measure. Raul Serrano and Eder Serrano, who also lives at the residence, began chasing Amos on foot.
Amos dropped the tape measure and ran toward Depot Street, Merlo said.
Police called a wrecker to tow the car. As the wrecker arrived, Merlo said, Amos showed up with a gas can and said he had run out of fuel.
Officers arrested Amos, who "tried to jerk away several times and would not give the officer his right hand to be handcuffed," Merlo said.
Amos was charged with burglary, resisting arrest and theft of property. He was held on $10,500 bond at Bedford County Jail before posting bond.
Drug charges
Drug charges were filed against two persons in a car stopped for a light law violation Monday night.
The driver, Juliette Suzanne Talley, 37, of Tullahoma, allowed Nelson and K-9 Remy to search the car.
Remy "alerted" on the back seat, SPD Officer Benjamin Burris said.
Burris found a glass pipe and three white rocks which field tested positive for crack cocaine in the area where he said Lloyd Everette Gant, 38, Hilltop Road, was sitting.
Talley handed Nelson "a small white rock" which also tested positive for crack cocaine, Burris said.
Both suspects were charged with possession of a schedule II drug. Gant was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and Talley with light law violation for a non-working headlight.
* Another drug-related charge was filed against Terry Wayne Fitzgerald, 38, Lewisburg, following an argument at a Couch Lane home Friday.
"A glass pipe with white residue in it" was at Fitzgerald's feet, Nelson said.
Fitzgerald was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, assault and public intoxication.
