The suspect, Bert Crumpton of Oakland, Calif., has occasionally visited a girlfriend in the Shelbyville area, Detective Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department said.
Crumpton allegedly defrauded First Community Bank of $5,000 on Feb. 11, Crews said.
"The man approached a teller and attempted to retrieve $5,000 off of a Mastercard he had," Crews said. "The transaction was denied for insufficient funds.
"Crumpton then had the teller place a call to what she believed to be a representative of the credit card company. The person on the other end of the line advised her how to process the card and gave her an override code which allowed Crumpton to gain access to $5,000."
The bank and police were notified a few days later by a Mastercard representative of the scam, as well as others Crumpton allegedly committed.
Alameda County, Calif., sheriff's department officials said Crumpton was charged last week with three counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, according to Crews.
A Bedford County warrant charging Crumpton with the same offense will be served upon his release from jail in California, Crews said.
Short chase
A driver with a stolen plate on his car and no insurance was chased down after crashing into another car in front of a police cruiser early Saturday night.

Officer Jerry Lawrence said Roblero attempted to flee on foot. Lawrence arrested Roblero approximately a block away.
Roblero was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, theft of property, resisting arrest and violation of the financial responsibility law. He posted $4,500 bond at Bedford County Jail.
