Home invaders aim gun at man's head

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

A man who awoke to find two thieves in his home told police one pointed a gun at his head before leaving.

Mitchell Gilliam, 47, of Farrar's Trailer Park, Barksdale Lane, said he awoke about 2 a.m. Sunday to find two men stealing his television set, VCR and six rods and reels, according to Officer Justin Smith of the Shelbyville Police Department.

A fight broke out as Gilliam followed them outside, Smith said.

"One of them pulled out a black, semi-automatic handgun, pulled back the slide and pointed the gun at his head demanding money," Smith said. "He then ran back into the trailer to get to safety."

No money was handed over.

Gilliam later discovered four shots had been fired into his van's windshield and the left rear tire punctured. His house and car keys were also taken, Smith said.

The suspects were described as approximately 5-foot-7, white, approximately 140 pounds each with short dark hair and wearing T-shirts and jeans. One wore a black hat.

Gilliam told police he didn't recognize the men.

Police chases

A suspect accused of pointing a gun at two men was arrested, along with a passenger in his car, after a short pursuit early Sunday.

Two Lynchburg men notified police by cell phone that the driver of a Mercury Marquis pulled beside their car, pointed a handgun and began following them. The men were eventually able to get behind the suspect, who was spotted by Officer Jerry Lawrence as both cars turned from Deery Street onto East Lane Street.

James Edward Thompson, 22, Industrial Parkway, allegedly fled from that location to Park Place where he and passenger Jeremy Shane Hargrove, 28, Hoover Street, attempted to run but were captured by Lawrence.

Both were drunk, according to Lawrence. Thompson tested .14 on an intoximeter.

A .380 caliber Lorcin handgun was under the driver's side front seat and 1.31 grams of a substance believed to be marijuana were found in one of Hargrove's pockets, Lawrence said.

Thompson was charged with aggravated assault, first offense DUI, evading arrest and possession of a handgun while under the influence. He was being held on $14,000 bond Monday at Bedford County Jail.

Hargrove was charged with simple possession of a schedule VI drug and public intoxication. He was released on $2,000 bond.

*A car being blue-lighted by police reached over 100 mph on U.S. 231 North before stopping for a pursuing officer Sunday.

Stephan Lee Glenn, 20, Murfreesboro, was clocked at 71 mph in a 30 mph zone on North Main Street, Sgt. Charles Kimbril said.

"Upon turning around on the vehicle, it accelerated rapidly," Kimbril said. "I initiated emergency equipment and reached speeds in excess of 100 mph before the vehicle finally stopped near Airport Road."

Glenn, who allegedly refused to submit to an intoximeter test, was charged with DUI, driving on a suspended license, violation of the implied consent law, reckless driving, speeding and financial responsibility (no insurance). He posted $5,500 bond at Bedford County Jail.

Pot found

Problems piled up Sunday for a man involved in a three-vehicle pileup about 5:30 a.m. Sunday on North Main Street at Madison Street in Shelbyville.

Police said an SUV driven by Jonathan Martin Hickman, 24, Nashville, hit the rear of an SUV driven by Christopher Milliken, 26, Shelbyville, knocking it into the rear of a truck operated by Angela White, 37, of Lewisburg.

Hickman was taken to Bedford County Medical Center by ambulance and Milliken by private vehicle, police said.

Following treatment Hickman was charged with DUI, driving on a suspended license and violation of the implied consent law. Justin Wade Risner, 22, Nashville, a passenger in the Hickman SUV, was charged with public intoxication.

A search of Hickman upon arrival at Bedford County Jail resulted in confiscation of 23.78 grams of marijuana from a shoe, Sgt. Charles Kimbril said. Additional charges of introducing a controlled substance into a penal institution and possession of a schedule IV drug for resale were filed.

Later Sunday an Antioch man reported the SUV driven by Hickman was stolen. Hickman was charged with theft of property by Metro police.

Hickman is being held on $23,000 bond.

Knock it off!

A man allegedly knocking on Deery Street doors early Saturday was captured after allegedly attempting to elude officers.

Jason Blake Bynum, 26, White Drive, knocked at two houses around midnight, yelling he wanted to come in at one, Officer Sam Jacobs said.

Bynum allegedly ran when Jacobs saw him hiding under a bush. Jacobs later found Bynum hiding behind another nearby residence where he surrendered.

Police filed charges of resisting stop/frisk/halt/search and public intoxication against Bynum, who was being held on $2,500 bond Monday at Bedford County Jail.

Unneighborly act

A resident of Circle O Trailer Park, Railroad Avenue, has been charged with stealing nine video games from a neighbor's home.

Mark Anthony Buntley, 19, allegedly took the games Friday night from the residence of Jason L. Henley.

Buntley is being held on charges of aggravated burglary and theft of property pending $52,000 bond.

Stolen car found

A car stolen July 8 from the residence of Anthony M. and Danielle N. Lockemy, Frazier Road, Beech Grove, was recovered Sunday afternoon on West Highland Street in Shelbyville, police said.
