Lady Champs score crucial win
Cascade defeated District 11-A/AA rival Huntland 4-2 in a critical road matchup on Thursday, keeping the Lady Champs in the running to finish in the top half of the district standings.
The Lady Hornets struck first after a defensive miscommunication by Cascade (6-2-1, 3-2 11-A/AA).
Ashley Bledsoe answered within minutes, scoring on a fast break for the Lady Champs. Ryann Underwood used a fast break of her own to put them up 2-1 at halftime.
Bledsoe took an assist from Underwood for the third Cascade goal. Katie Mangrum supplied an assist to Underwood for their fourth tally.
Huntland's Ginger Anderson scored the final goal, but it was too little too late.
"This game was hard fought and was won largely due to the effort of our midfield players: Katie Mangrum, Aimee Taylor, Mary Saylor and Erin McBee," Lady Champ coach Patricia Petty said. "All four played at high intensity throughout the entire game and kept possession on our side as they have been doing."
Ann Mullen took charge in goal for Cascade with 10 saves.
The Lady Champs face Bedford County rival Webb in Wartrace on Monday at 4.
