Fire Academy flags at half-staff

Monday, January 29, 2007
Flags are being flown at half-staff at the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy on Unionville-Deason Road in honor of a Tennessee firefighter who died in a Chattanooga blaze early Friday morning.

Firefighter Shane Daughetee, 24, of the Highway 58 Fire Department in Hamilton County was trying to rescue a family when he fell through the roof of the home. Two additional firefighters were injured trying to rescue him.

Daughetee was a seven-year veteran of the fire department and was recently chosen as "Firefighter of the Year." He is the first firefighter fatality for Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department and the first for the state this year.

"The firefighter brotherhood is a very close-knit organization," said Roger Hawks, Academy executive director. "Anytime we lose a firefighter, especially one from our home state, the loss is deeply felt by all and we are reminded of the sacrifice and dedication of all emergency first responders."
