Ten qualify for city election

Friday, March 30, 2007

Ten candidates have qualified to run for offices in the June 7 Shelbyville city election, including three candidates for mayor.

This is the last city election to be held in an odd-numbered year. Starting in 2008, city elections will be held in November of even-numbered years, at the same time as state and federal general elections. This will save the city the cost of having its own separate election.

Although city council candidates must live in the ward for which they are running, all citizens of Shelbyville vote in elections for all wards.

Here are the qualifying candidates, with (I) indicating an incumbent:

MAYOR

  • Wallace Cartwright
  • Jerry Robinson
  • Geneva Smith (I)

CITY COUNCIL, WARD 2

  • Jimmy Darden
  • Albert C. Stephenson
  • Leonard L. Travis (I)

CITY COUNCIL, WARD 4

  • Lee Roy Cunningham
  • June E. Taylor
  • James L. "Jamie" Williams III

CITY COUNCIL, WARD 6

  • Fred G. Harrison (I)

Ward 4 incumbent Robert Frazier did not qualify for re-election.
