Wrong moves lead to drug arrest

Tuesday, May 8, 2007

Squealing tires with his lights off as a police officer observed was just the beginning of problems for a Shelbyville man Saturday night.

Michael Cartez Knox, 23, Landers Street, was carrying marijuana in a book bag on his car's floorboard, Officer Tracey Nelson said.

Nelson stopped Knox on Madison Street about 11:20 p.m. Knox was arrested for driving on a suspended license and reckless driving before drug dog Remy detected the marijuana.

A bag contained 11.22 grams of marijuana and a set of digital scales, Nelson said. Additional charges of simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia were filed.

Knox posted $1,750 bond.

Home burglaries

Shelbyville police have investigated two home burglaries since Friday.

Two rings were stolen from the unlocked residence of Sheena Prince, Oak Street, between 6:30 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. Friday.

An eMachine computer, Sony Playstation II and computer desk were taken from the Germantown Road home of Chad Wilkinson overnight April 20. The theft was reported Saturday.

Easy arrests

Two men accused of public intoxication made their arrests convenient to officers Sunday afternoon.

They drove directly to Bedford County Workhouse, officers said.

Mitchell Keith Gilliam, 48, South Cannon Boulevard, and Richard Garron Smith, 54, Lewisburg, were charged after a "suspicious vehicle" was reported behind the workhouse.

The men had a nearly empty bottle of vodka, Officer Carol Jean said, and were too intoxicated to undergo field sobriety tests.

Neither was charged with DUI since officers hadn't seen them driving, Jean said.
