Drug dogs find pot during traffic stops

Thursday, August 9, 2007

Drug dogs were active in Shelbyville Tuesday night, finding marijuana in two vehicles, authorities said.

*Remy, the Shelbyville Police Department's dog, alerted on the console of a car driven by Steven Clowers, 18, La Vergne, during a traffic stop on North Main Street near midnight.

Two bags containing approximately 6.06 grams of marijuana were discovered along with six rolled marijuana cigarettes in the ashtray, police said.

Clowers, who was initially stopped by Officer Tracey Nelson for allegedly speeding 42 mph in a 30 mph zone on North Main Street, was charged with possession of a schedule VI drug and posted $3,000 bond.

*Sem, of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department, sniffed out a box containing marijuana, popes, rolling machines, rolling papers and hand scales in a truck driven by Robert Andrew Slaughter, 19, Hunters Lane.

Sem's handler, Sgt. David Sakich, stopped Slaughter's truck for alleged loud music at 10:22 p.m. on Madison Street. Sakich said Slaughter seemed "nervous" when asked about possible narcotics within the truck.

Slaughter, charged with possession of a schedule VI drug and possession of drug paraphernalia, posted $5,000 bond.

School entered

Two triple beam balance scales, a projector and television-VCR were stolen from one of the portable classrooms at Bedford County Alternative School over the summer.

Plexiglass was broken in order to reach inside and unlock a door, police said.

*Melissa Poff told police her wallet and contents were taken from a locker at Tyson Foods, West Jackson Street, between 6:15-9 a.m. Tuesday.
