Lady Feet spirits remain high despite loss in opener

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

Katie Dunn scored nine of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter to lead an experienced Middle Tennessee Christian team to a 64-30 win at Webb, ruining Jeff Mitchell's coaching debut for the Lady Feet.

"We were excited about their effort," Mitchell said after the Hall of Fame contest. "That's just a really good team. I'm really impressed with that they've done with their girls program over at MTCS. They're big, strong and all know how to play.

"To play a team like that and really give good effort throughout the game, we're excited about that. The girls are encouraged."

MTC reached the Class A sectionals last year and return four starters from a team that won 21 games under coach Dan Wilkerson.

Elizabeth Lawrence, one of three freshman to start for Webb, scored in every quarter and led her team with 13 points. Zola Quao hauled in seven rebounds.

The Lady Cougars hunkered down in the paint with their 2-3 zone in the early going and forced the hosts to score over the top of them. With the Lady Feet out of their comfort zone, they turned the ball over several times, resulting in numerous transition points for MTC.

"We've got to sure up getting back on defense," Mitchell said. "We've got to work hard on getting back and locating people. We played a little zone there and still didn't turn our heads. We just gave up way too many easy baskets, which is something with more conditioning we'll be able to sure up."

The visitors went up 19-9 in the opening period, extended that advantage to 31-18 by halftime and carried a 47-27 upper hand into the final stanza.

Kate Mullins tallied 16 points for the Lady Cougars. Samantha Barrett contributed 11 and Amy Mullins 10.

Webb heads to Huntland on Friday with tipoff at 6 p.m.
