Lady Champs flood Webb with 3s

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

My word! Where did that come from?

Cascade rained in 3-pointers with the relative ease of a 10-year NBA veteran and ran away from visiting Webb 76-42.

Shelby Nelson kick-started the hosts' offense in the first quarter with two of her season-high six 3-pointers as part of a behind-the-arc effort that totaled 13 3s for the Lady Champions.

A little scouting paid off for Cascade and coach Chad Spencer, who figured Webb would run some "junk defenses" against them like the diamond-and-one or the triangle-and-two.

"We had an offense for that from years past when I had Deonta (Twilley) and Emmanuel (Andrews)," said Spencer, who coached the current Shelbyville standouts while at Liberty Middle.

"When you have other kids shooting the ball like that, you can't play anybody junk. You've got to honor everybody out there.

"We did a good job of finding our shooters out of our offense."

A pair of 3s from Tiffany Gibbs with less than a minute remaining in the opening half helped the Lady Champs jog off to the locker room with a 37-24 upper hand. Her last bucket of the second quarter accounted for the first points of what wound up being an 11-0 run.

The difference reached 31 after Cascade (7-10) tailed off the third period with a 13-2 spurt. They entered the fourth frame up 64-35.

"I couldn't be more impressed," Webb coach Jeff Mitchell said.

Following Nelson in the scoring column for the victors was Ashley Bledsoe with 14. Millie Carter sank three from long range en route to 11 points. Gibbs finished with 10. Chelsea Calvert came down with five rebounds.

Zola Quao and Elizabeth Lawrence provided much of the points for the Lady Feet (5-10). Quao led all scorers with 20 points and nine boards. Lawrence tallied 12 points.

"They're good players," Spencer said of Webb's duo. "They'll probably be the best two players to come through Webb."

"Offensively, Zola played about as well as she's played. Our kids didn't quit," Mitchell said.

The Orange and Black hope to maintain their hot stroke this evening when District 9-A rival Eagleville arrives.

"Our girls have had a hard time all year long playing two or three real good games in a row," Spencer said. "We'll play a good game and then take off a game and go through the motions. (Tuesday) night we can't go through the motions."

Webb trots back out for their fourth game in five days tonight as they welcome Franklin Classical to the Barton Athletic Center at 6.
