Wednesday, January 23, 2008

With a very young team and a brutal schedule as of late, Webb has stuck to their main goal -- improvement.

It couldn't have been more evident Tuesday night at the Barton Athletic Center as the Lady Feet improved throughout the contest, played their best ball down the stretch and pulled out a solid 50-43 victory over visiting Franklin Classic.

"We were sluggish early probably since we were coming into our fourth game in five days," Webb coach Jeff Mitchell said. "But (Elizabeth) Lawrence made several plays and Zola (Quao) has really improved. She played great at Cascade and, after she slowed down, she really made some plays for us tonight.

"Shayla Mosley and Alex Walker really stepped up and played hard these last two nights as well."

Lawrence finished off her standout 26-point effort by drilling six straight free throws in the final minute to seal the win for the home team.

From the outset, the contest was up for grabs. Sparked by a three-pointer from Callie Vaughn, Webb turned an early 5-2 deficit into a 9-5 lead with a quick 7-0 run. However, the Lady Knights responded to knot the score at 9-all after one period.

FC followed that with five unanswered points to grab a 14-9 edge, but the Lady Feet fought back and traded punches with the visitors for the remainder of the first half. The two squads found themselves deadlocked again at 21-all heading to the break.

After a back-and-forth third frame, a Lawrence runner gave the hosts a 30-27 upper hand going into the final period.

The Lady Knights rallied to seize a short-lived one-point lead midway through the fourth stanza, but Lawrence responded once again by draining two straight treys to give Webb (6-10) the lead for good.

"I was really happy with how we moved the ball," Mitchell said. "We just looked more like a basketball team than we did earlier in the season. We're learning how to play and this was a big win for us, so I think we have a lot to look forward to."

Along with Lawrence's big game, Quao pitched in another 14 for the winners.

FC was paced by Evelyn Clark with 16 and Jordan Elrod with 12.

Webb travels to McMinnville to take on Boyd Christian on Saturday night at 6.
