Community placed three players in double figures for the first time in ages to post a 49-39 District 9-A win over Eagleville in front of a large crowd in Unionville on Friday night.

Eagleville's Katie Cook posted five points to help her team to a 10-9 advantage after one period -- but it would be their last lead.

Aubrey Boyce and Courtney Vassar heated up what had become a stagnant Viqueen offense in recent games with 10 points between them in the second quarter. Meanwhile, the Viqueen defense held the visitors to just six points to take a 22-16 lead at intermission.

"It was good for us to come out and hit some shots early in the game," Community coach Allison Layne said. "We have had trouble scoring and we were able to regain some of our confidence shooting the ball.

"I was really pleased with our defensive effort after the first quarter."

Both teams picked up the pace on offense in the third period as the Lady Eagles opened with a six-point run behind post player Jennilee Lenker, only to have the Viqueens to come back and run off 10 unanswered points to fuel a 36-28 lead going into the final minutes.

Katlyn Doss scored six points for the visitors in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't be enough to overcome the Viqueens' collective 13 points.

Marissa Jones hit 4-of-4 free throw attempts in the closing minutes to help seal the deal for the Purple and Gold who were an impressive 11-of-12 from the line.

"We really needed this win to get our team back on track," Layne said. "We have played some adversity injury-wise with some key players and still managed to hold it together for the most part.

"I thought that we had good post play tonight and we handled their press pretty well considering that we have a couple of sophomores running the point for us.

"We have some crucial district games coming up and we need to continue to build on this outing."

Lenker earned game-high honors with 15 points.

Community got 13 from Vassar, Boyce had 12 and Jones netted 10 for the winners.

The Viqueens hit 7-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Community visits Hampshire on Tuesday.
